Upcoming Conference Information

NAF is proceeding with the 2005 Academy Leadership Summit based on our desire to continue important regional discussions relating to the continued improvement of academy performance and positioning in the context of the evolving Academy membership agreements, as well as local assessments of current conditions in Miami.

This message is intended to update and further clarify the impact of Hurricane Wilma on NAF?s plans to conduct the 2005 Academy Leadership Summit, November 2-5 in Miami. The following information is detailed below:

1. NAF is proceeding with the conference as scheduled.

2. An update on South Florida Schools.

3. A revised agenda has been developed.

4. Conference registration cancellation policies remain in effect.

NAF IS PROCEEDING WITH THE CONFERENCE AS SCHEDULED

NAF staff members, including President John Ferrandino, are already on the ground in Miami. Major travel routes into and out of the city, including the Florida Turnpike, are open to regular traffic. Transportation between the airport and hotel is readily available. The hotel has restored all services, with the exception of the spa, and the Doral area has had power for the last few days. Area restaurants are open and the hotel is receiving its food deliveries. Tap water is safe to drink throughout most of Miami-Dade County. While a curfew remains in effect during overnight hours, from 12:00 a.m.(midnight) to 6 a.m., this should have no impact on scheduled conference activities.

2. AN UPDATE ON SOUTH FLORIDA SCHOOLS

Conditions in South Florida differ dramatically based on the specific location and the storm path. While all three South Florida counties, Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade, sustained damage, the extent of the damage differs, as follows:

Miami-Dade Schools are closed today and Tuesday, pending full restoration of power to all schools, though no other major damage has been reported.

Broward County has debris scattered over its 240 school sites, with 100 sustaining some window and portable damage. According to the district "Aside from damaged roofs, windows and portables, there was little major structural damage sustained by buildings and sites." The district administration building had its western wall of windows blown out, but "The building is structurally sound; electricity has been restored to the site, and repair work is well underway to prepare the building for reopening."

Palm Beach schools remained closed on Monday, as only 118 of 164 schools have power, and some are still lacking phone and water access. Teachers may be asked to return on Tuesday.

3. A REVISED AGENDA HAS BEEN DEVELOPED

As Miami-Dade Public Schools have not yet reopened, the design studios, originally planned for Friday, have been cancelled. A revised agenda has been developed, allowing for more intensive workshop and discussion time within regions and around areas of interest to the NAF network. The revised agenda is available for download from www.NAF.org .

4. CONFERENCE REGISRATION CANCELLATION POLICIES REMAIN IN EFFECT.

Any cancellations received by the October 25 cut-off will be honored.

If you have additional questions, please contact your NAF regional manager or by email to conferenceinfo@naf.org.
